Scope and Content Fort on the Antonine Wall at Rough Castle, Falkirk The Antonine Wall stretched from the Clyde in the W to the Forth in the E. The Wall was a linear boundary designed to cut off access to southern Scotland. There were about 17 forts along its length with fortlets and signal posts between. This is an aerial view of the fort. Much of the ditch which surrounds the fort has been cut into rock. This proved too hard to do to the NNE. There is a steep slope to the W, and the ditch follows it round. There may have been a settlement to the SE. The site was excavated in 1904. The remains of stone buildings found in the annexe were reburied. Finds are now in the RMS.
