Scope and Content Plans of Haddington Town-house, East Lothian Haddington Town-house was built to replace a tolbooth that was so ruinous that the council had to meet in the local library. It was financed through loans and using public subscriptions. None of the original building by William Adam survives. The assembly-room was added in 1788. The south block proved too small for the jail and was rebuilt in 1823-5. The steeple became ruinous and was rebuilt in 1830. The last surviving work by Adam, the north block, became ruinous and was rebuilt in 1854. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
