Scope and Content Plans of Dumfries Town-house, Dumfries and Galloway ('Midsteeple') Dumfries Town-house was built to provide much-needed office and prison space. Outcry over the burgh council's mishandling of the funds led to a committee of council and community overseeing the work. The resulting minute book survives. Originally, the first floor housed a court-room and town-hall, then, in 1830, a council-house. On the ground floor, there was a weigh-house, guard-house, and small cell in the steeple. The Town-house was too small. Other buildings were always needed. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
