Scope and Content Fort at Burnswark Hill, Dumfries and Galloway Burnswark Hill is the location of several sites. The earliest is a cairn and cist burial. Several centuries later a hillfort was built on the site. On either side of this these is a Roman camp. There are also other enclosures.. This is a view of the north-west Roman camp. It is irregular in form and much of the rampart and ditch can still be seen. A slight outward turn of the rampart helps to protect the gate closest to the hillfort.
