Scope and Content Fort known as Castle O'er at Eskdalemuir, Dumfries and Galloway Castle O'er is a very impressive Iron Age hillfort, though the several phases of defences do make it hard to interpret the site. There are several linear earthworks in the area as well as a settlement within the ramparts. This is an aerial view of the site. The earliest phase is represented by a pair of ramparts and a ditch. Entrances were to the E and SW. It was later reduced in size when the inner rampart was replaced by a wall. There were up to nine houses inside. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
