Scope and Content Stone circle at Balbirnie, Kirkcaldy, Fife The stone circle at Balbirnie, along with the henge at Balfarg, form one of the most important groups of Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments in E Scotland. The site has had three phases of activity. It was rebuilt 125 m SE of its original location. This is a view of the site. The stone circle had several construction phases. In the last phase, the interior of the circle was filled by cairn material. The site was excavated, in advance of road building, between 1970 and 71. The cairn, which contained up to sixteen cremations, may have originally started off as mounds covering the individual cists. The finds are now in the RMS. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
