Scope and Content First-floor plan of Ayr Town House ('Town's New Buildings'), South Ayrshire The Town House was built near the High Tolbooth which it replaced. The building stone came from Cullaloe in Fife through the Forth Clyde Canal at a special cheap rate. The completion was celebrated with an inaugural ball in November 1830. In 1878, the assembly-room was changed to council chamber, the supper-room to a committee room, the ante-room to a strong room, and the coffee-room to a town clerk's office. A new Main Hall was added. Fire damage in 1901 led to internal alterations. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
