Scope and Content Canongate Tolbooth, City of Edinburgh Canongate Tolbooth replaced a ruinous medieval building shortly after Canongate changed from ecclesiastical burgh to burgh of regality. To pay for it, 2,000 merks were levied on the burgh and the associated barony of Broughton. At first, the jail was in the tower, but by 1689 the top floor of the main block seems to have housed female prisoners. By 1837, and until 1848, the tolbooth was a debtors' prison with eight heated rooms. Burgh and barony courts were held in the tolbooth until the late 19th century. The burgh was acquired by the City of Edinburgh in 1639, and amalgamated with the city in 1856. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
