Scope and Content Sundial on tower of Aberdeen Tolbooth, City of Aberdeen Aberdeen Tolbooth was built in the 17th century and modified during the next three centuries along with the surrounding buildings. Only the tower or 'wardhouse' survives from the original building. The sundial set into the south front of the 'wardhouse' bears a Latin motto meaning, 'As flies the shadow, so does life'. It may date from 1733-4 when payment was made 'for a fine peuther dial and for cutting, calculating, painting and gilding the same.' Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
