Scope and Content The Canongate, Edinburgh This view of the Canongate dates to 1647. The Canongate was originally a separate burgh that lay outside the walls of the Old Town. Originally, it was linked to the Abbey of Holyrood. The Canongate was less densely populated than the Old Town, and it had many fine buildings with gardens behind. The entrance to Moray House which was built in 1628 for Mary, Dowager Countess of Home, is marked by two pointed pillars. These may still be seen today. Opposite is the Tolbooth, formerly the civic centre for the Canongate. Today it is a museum. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
