Scope and Content Ayr County Buildings, South Ayrshire Ayr County Buildings was built as the home of the county council. However, the town council was also based there in return for contributing £500 towards construction costs, along with material salvaged from the High Tolbooth. The dome covers a rotunda with an elaborate staircase and doors to the firs-floor justiciary court and county hall. There was a large prison at the back, and also the town council-room, clerk's office and record room. Most of the external stone came from a quarry at Corrie on Arran. Its varied colouring worried the architect. The building is now occupied by Ayr Sheriff Court. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
