Scope and Content Kirkintilloch Steeple, East Dunbartonshire Kirkintilloch Steeple replaced a tolbooth dating to at least 1659. It was paid for by taxing local landowners, public subscriptions and loans. By 1860 it needed extensive repairs and a new Town Hall was discussed. This was built in 1905-6. The ground floor held a court-house and two small cells. The first floor housed the council-room. There was a 'steeple-school' on the top floor. The bell cracked in 1829 and was recast in 1835 and 1849. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
