Scope and Content Broch of Borwick, Orkney The Broch of Borwick is very well placed. It stands on a precipitous headland close to a source of fresh water and a landing-area for boats. There was originally a protective wall on the landward side. This is a view from the outside of the site and as well as the remains of the broch itself, it also shows the outer defences. These consisted of four concentric ramparts across the neck of the promontory. Excavations in the 19th century uncovered traces of outbuildings. They also found artefacts including combs that suggest that the site was still in use up to the mid 1st millennium AD. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
