Scope and Content Henge and stone circle known as The Stones of Stenness, Orkney The Stones of Stenness consist of ditch and bank surrounding the remains of a stone circle. Several stones were destroyed in the 19th century, but thanks to restoration work done in the early 20th century 4 of the 12 stones still remain. This is a view of four of the stones. The tallest is 5 m high. In the background can be seen the Watch Stone, one of two outliers associated with the monument. When the site was excavated the bones of cattle sheep and dog were found in the ditch along with a human finger bone. Fragments of Grooved Ware pottery were also found.
