Scope and Content Lanark Town-house, South Lanarkshire Lanark Town-house replaced an older tolbooth which was too ruinous to repair. The gentlemen of the county contributed £100 to the building in return for the use of a meeting room. It was replaced by a new County Buildings and jail in 1836. The corner extension to the right of the picture was built in 1837. It replaced the jail which was part of the original tolbooth on the same site. In 1834, this was so insecure that it was claimed it would only hold honest prisoners. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
