Scope and Content General view of Town House from south-west, Main Street, Campbeltown, Argyll and Bute Campbeltown was founded by Archibald, 7th Earl of Argyll, in 1609. By 1700 it was a royal burgh. A small town, with fishing as one of its main industries, it began to expand in the early 19th century as a result of large-scale whisky production. The Town House was erected in 1758-60 to replace an earlier tolbooth on the same site. Designed by John Douglas, it has a rectangular main block with an octagonal steeple projecting from the principal front. The original spire was replaced in 1778. An extension (left) in the same style as the main block was added in 1866 and the interior was remodelled at the same time. Originally, the prison cells were situated on the ground floor and the town hall and court room were on the first floor. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
