Scope and Content Ayr Town House ('Town's New Buildings'), South Ayrshire The Town House was built near the High Tolbooth which it replaced. The building stone came from Cullaloe in Fife through the Forth Clyde Canal at a special cheap rate. The completion was celebrated with an inaugural ball in November 1830. There original plan included space for shops on the ground floor. The block to the left of the picture was added in 1878-81 when the Assembly Room was converted to a Council Chamber. It included a new Main Hall for functions. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
