Scope and Content Detail of steeple of Ayr Town House ('Town's New Buildings'), South Ayrshire The Town House was built near the High Tolbooth which it replaced. The building stone came from Cullaloe in Fife through the Forth Clyde Canal at a special cheap rate. The completion was celebrated with an inaugural ball in November 1830. The octagonal shape copies the famous Tower of the Winds in Athens. The spire's simple point was designed by Thomas Hamilton after lightning destroyed the original copper figure of Triton in 1836. The burgh clock was made in Glasgow in 1830. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
