Scope and Content Broch and settlement at Wag of Forse, Caithness, Highland Wag of Forse now appears as little more than a pile of stones but its ground plan shows several periods of building. Built over a settlement it was used as a source of stone for two later long houses. There are several other buildings in the area. This aerial view of Forse Wag shows the different phases of occupation. The circular wall of the broch is at the top of the image. One long house was built over part of the broch and the second, with two rows of stone pillars, stands to the west. The type of long house seen here is known to archaeologists as a "wag" which may come from a Gaelic word meaning little cave. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
