Scope and Content Settlement at Knap of Howar, Papa Westray, Orkney This neolithic settlement is at Knap of Howar. Until is was excavated in the 1930s much of the site was hidden by 4 m of sand. The settlement consists of two structures and would have been a single-family farmstead. This is a view of the outside of the larger building which appears to have been a house. The walls, standing up to 1.6 m high, are quite thick so there was a short entrance passage. There would have been a wooden door at the inner end of this. Many of the finds from the site are now in the RMS. These include bone and stone tools and fragments of a local pottery known as Unstan Ware. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
