Scope and Content Newgate and Jedburgh County Buildings, Jedburgh, Scottish Borders Newgate was the prison for the next-door council-house. In 1779, the debtors' prison was moved to the council-house, and in 1789 a new jail replaced it. Paid for by the heritors, the County Buildings replaced the council-house in 1812. Newgate is on the left of the picture with the County Buildings to the right. Newgate housed a museum in1859 and later a kitchen. One of its three bells is probably a manufacturer's replacement for one that had 'entirely lost its sound.' The County Buildings were altered in1861-2 and the court-room moved to a new south wing.
