Scope and Content Archway of Newgate, Jedburgh, Scottish Borders Newgate was the prison for the next-door council-house. In 1779, the debtors' prison was moved to the council-house, and in 1789 a new jail replaced it. Paid for by the heritors, the County Buildings replaced the council-house in 1812. The burgh arms came from a public well. They were set into a blocked window. The 1755 date-stone only marks the start of construction. The contractor, a bailie, went over-budget. A parliamentary candidate paid for the completion in 1761. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
