Scope and Content Canongate Tolbooth, City of Edinburgh Canongate Tolbooth replaced a ruinous medieval building shortly after Canongate changed from ecclesiastical burgh to burgh of regality. To pay for it, 2,000 merks were levied on the burgh and the associated barony of Broughton. Two bells, each hanging from a bell-frame, survive in the bell-chamber. The smaller bell was made by Jan Burgerhuys in 1608, and the larger one was recast in 1847. Burgh and barony courts were held in the tolbooth until the late 19th century. The burgh was acquired by the City of Edinburgh in 1639, and amalgamated with the city in 1856. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
