Scope and Content Ayr High Tolbooth ('Dungeon Clock'), South Ayrshire Built in 1578, the High Tolbooth replaced one first recorded in 1427. It was altered in the 17th and 18th centuries and then finally demolished in 1825 because it was falling down. The north tower had two prison cells and a forestair for executions. It was built in 1722 using masonry from St John's Church and a nearby Cromwellian fort. In 1785 Robert Adam planned to alter it because it was part of the view across New Bridge.
