Scope and Content Drawing Room, Seafield, Doonfoot Road, Ayr, South Ayrshire Seafield, Ayr, home of the engineer, Sir William Arrol, was built in 1888-9 by Robert A Bryden of the architectural firm, Clarke & Bell. Harry Bedford Lemere was commissioned to photograph the interior in 1890, shortly after the house was completed. The room has an arched fireplace alcove, flanked by Ionic-style pilasters, and decorated with a painted frieze of Classical figures. The elaborate overmantel has a central mirror and complicated array of mirrored shelves for displaying ornaments. The room, although grand, has a minimum display of bric-a-brac, and a simple arrangement of furniture, in sharp contrast with the earlier Victorian fashion of surfaces crowded with knick-knacks, and rooms crammed with furniture.
