Scope and Content Dining Room, Seafield, Doonfoot Road, Ayr, South Ayrshire Seafield, an large Italianate villa built in 1888-9 by Robert A Bryden of the Glasgow firm of architects, Clarke & Bell, was the home of the engineer, Sir William Arrol. This photograph of the dining room was taken in 1890 by Harry Bedford Lemere. This 'heavy' room has a dark panelled ceiling and dado, and matching ornate mirrored overmantels above the fireplace and sideboard. Although there are electric wall lights, an oil lamp with a pleated and tasselled silk shade hangs over the table. In the Victorian period most houses were lit by candles, oil or gas. The invention of the electric light in 1887 provided a much brighter light, but installation was expensive and confined to grander country houses able to generate their own electricity.
