Scope and Content Drawing Room, Seafield, Doonfoot Road, Ayr, South Ayrshire This photograph of the drawing room of Seafield, Ayr, was taken in 1890 by Harry Bedford Lemere. The house, designed by Robert A Bryden of the Glasgow architectural firm, Clarke & Bell, was built in 1888-9 for the engineer, Sir William Arrol. This rather grand white room, elegantly furnished in a French style, has an elaborate cornice and an ornate, heavily embossed wallpaper frieze. There is a Classical influence, shown in the overdoor (right) and echoed in the Ionic-style pilasters. The Victorian drawing room was regarded as the ladies' room and used for taking tea. It usually had lighter wall decoration compared to the 'heavy' style of the dining room, and French styles of furniture were thought to be particularly appropriate.
