Scope and Content Dining Room, Yester House, East Lothian (now a private house) Yester House, the home of the Marquesses of Tweeddale, was built in the early 18th century as a Classical mansion to the design of James Smith & Alexander MacGill. Over the next 250 years, the interior was altered and improved by several of Scotland's most renowned architects, including William Adam and his sons, Robert & John, and the 19th-century architect, Robert Brown. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the house in 1905. The dining room, by William Adam, has a fairly heavy Classical cornice supported by Ionic pilasters around the walls. The flat ceiling has Rococo plasterwork relief, possibly by the plasterer, Joseph Enzer, at the corners, and above the door (left) is a plaster bust and elegant swagged decoration. The walls are hung with family portraits. It was the 4th Marquess of Tweeddale who, in 1729, commissioned William Adam to improve Yester and redecorate the interior. The dining room was formed from the original entrance hall, and Adam lowered the ceiling to single storey height. Its Classical style represents Adam's strongest period, and this interior is regarded as his best at Yester and one of the finest rooms in Scotland. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
