Scope and Content Dining Room, Yester House, East Lothian (now a private house) Yester House, the home of the Marquesses of Tweeddale, was built in the early 18th century as a Classical mansion to the design of James Smith & Alexander MacGill. Over the next 250 years, the interior was altered and improved by several of Scotland's most renowned architects, including William Adam and his sons, Robert & John, and the 19th-century architect, Robert Brown. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the house in 1905. The dining room, designed by William Adam, has a heavy Classical cornice supported by Ionic pilasters around the walls. The flat ceiling has exuberant Rococo plasterwork, possibly by the plasterer, Joseph Enzer, and a magnificent central decoration which descends over the dining table in a swirling pendant. The Rococo chimneypiece has a charming overmantel with supporting figures. Harry Bedford Lemere's photograph provides a unique record of a dining room in a grand country house in the early 20th century. The table, set for dinner, has elaborate floral decorations and is lit by candlelight although by this time electric light was readily available. Candelabra varied from their Georgian predecessors in style only, although shades became popular in the taste for rich and sumptuous decoration at the turn of the 20th century.
