Scope and Content Saloon Bar, Central Station Hotel, No 99 Gordon Street, Glasgow The Central Station Hotel was built in 1882-4 for the Caledonian Railway Company, and extended in 1900-5 by the architect, James Miller. This photograph of Miller's saloon bar was taken in 1906 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The saloon bar is simply furnished, with a striking black and white geometric patterned floor covering, and elegant Art Nouveau electric light fittings. The long bar counter displays an interesting array of glasses, potted plants and cake stands. The saloon bar, very much in the male domain of the hotel, was a popular and lively meeting place for both hotel guests and travellers arriving at the station. Ladies were not normally admitted, although women often served behind the bar counter. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
