Scope and Content Library, Duntreath Castle, Strathblane, Stirling This photograph of the library of Duntreath Castle was taken in 1898 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The castle was remodelled for Sir Archibald Edmonstone in 1890 by the Edinburgh architect, Sydney Mitchell. The library, on the circuit of principal rooms on the first floor of the house, opens to the drawing room at its far end. The room, with heavy ceiling beams and oak bookshelves, was designed for contemplation and study amid the rampant foliage. Sydney Mitchell redesigned Duntreath for its owner, Sir Archibald Edmonstone, as a modern palace based very much on the style of Holyrood Palace, Edinburgh, with a grand sweep of inter-connecting principal rooms on the first floor.
