Scope and Content Interior, St Cuthbert's Parish Church, Lothian Road, Edinburgh St Cuthbert's Parish Church, a large imposing Renaissance-style church with Baroque detailing, was designed by the architect, Hippolyte Jean Blanc, and built in 1892-5 at the west end of Princes Street Gardens on an ancient church site dating from the 12th century. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the building in 1895. The body of the church is vast but plain, with a U-plan gallery supported by columns, and two wide arches, with more gallery seating, opening into the transepts. The ceiling is compartmented, and the apsed chancel contains a white marble communion table. The rows of pew have scroll-topped ends. In 1906-8, the interior was enlivened by Blanc by the addition of an alabaster wall frieze in the apse, a modified version of Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper in high relief, and a pulpit, also by Blanc, borne on four red marble columns. This form of ornamentation, decidedly Anglican in inspiration, was a departure from traditional Scottish ecclesiastical architecture and caused much dissension. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
