Scope and Content Council Chamber, the City Chambers, No 80 George Square, Glasgow, from the north Glasgow City Chambers, the headquarters of the City Council, were designed in a grandiose style by William Young as a statement of civic pride and prosperity. The magnificent council chamber was photographed in c.1890 by Harry Bedford Lemere. The chamber, decorated in Spanish mahogany, has a deep frieze of Tynecastle Tapestry and a richly coloured and gilded ceiling. The councillors' chairs are arranged around the Lord Provost's seat, an elaborately carved chair gifted by Queen Victoria. Behind the councillors' seats is a shallow apse nicknamed the 'bed recess' after an architectural feature of old Glasgow tenements. It has seating for council officials at floor level, and a small gallery above for the public and the press. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
