Scope and Content Banqueting Hall, the City Chambers, No 80 George Square, Glasgow The City Chambers of Glasgow were designed by the Paisley-born architect, William Young, as a statement of civic pride and prosperity. This photograph of the banqueting hall was taken in c.1890 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The banqueting hall is used for civic events. This vast, double-height, barrel-vaulted room is decorated in an early Renaissance style with an elaborately decorated ceiling, ornate wall panels, and acanthus-decorated pilasters around the walls. The three central electrified chandeliers or 'electroliers' were one of the new technologies of the time, and were powered by a generator in the basement. The hall also had its own American elevator or lift, operated by hydraulic pressure. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
