Scope and Content Elder Library, No 228 Langlands Road, Govan, Glasgow The Elder Library was designed in 1901-3 by Sir John James Burnet as a Glasgow Corporation District Library for the burgh of Govan. The exterior of the building was photographed in 1903 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The building, designed in the style of a Baroque park pavilion, has a dramatic centrepiece with a gracefully curved colonnade topped by a dome. On the balustrade the figures of a shipwright and draughtsman flank the arms of the burgh of Govan. The library was presented to the burgh by Mrs John Elder in memory of her husband, owner of a large Govan shipbuilding yard. It was funded by an endowment from the Scottish-born American philanthropist, Andrew Carnegie, and opened by him in 1903. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
