Scope and Content Alloa Public Baths and Gymnasium, Primrose Street, Alloa, Clackmannan The Alloa public baths and gymnasium, built in 1895-8 on the corner of Primrose Street and Primrose Place, were designed by the architectural firm, Burnet &Campbell, and photographed shortly after opening in 1898 by the photographer, Bedford Lemere. This splendid, two-storeyed Scots Renaissance building was built in red ashlar with much sculpture and elaborate architectural features. The main entrance from Primrose Street (foreground) was through a tall, red granite recessed porch. The baths were presented to the town by a local mill owner and philanthropist, John Thomson Paton of Kincraigs Mill. Earlier, in 1888, Paton had donated an impressive town hall which contained science rooms, art studios and Alloa's first public library. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
