Scope and Content No 1 Belford Road, Dean, Edinburgh No 1 Belford Road was built in 1891 as a studio for the artist, Charles Martin Hardie. It was designed by George Washington Browne, who brilliantly exploited the steep site with its magnificent views to the north over Dean Village and the Water of Leith. This charming house, built in a Tudor style, has broad eaves, a half-timbered bay-window, a squat crenellated tower, and a canopy over the door. The cement base-course is stamped with a Gothic 'H', presumably for 'Hardie'. The front door lintel bears the words, 'Drumsheugh Toll', but the old toll-house that stood on this site was demolished in the late 19th century. Today, the ground floor is an office, and the upper floor belongs to the Edinburgh Society of Musicians. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
