Scope and Content Hay barn, Kilmote Farm, Highland Kilmote Farm and steading was built on the huge Sutherland estate, which, by 1873 comprised almost 1.3m acres, more than 90% of the county. The house at Kilmote is dated 1767 while the steading dates from the 19th century when a great deal of money was being spent on 'improvements' to the estate. This view is looking through the open doors of the hay barn from the south-west. Note the wooden rails inside to make a loose box. About a quarter of the land at Kilmote was likely to have been used for producing hay. A great deal of repair work was carried out in 1866 on the farm including re-roofing the sides of the straw barn which had been leaking and replacing the sarking. The total cost of all repairs carried out in 1866 came to £304. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
