Scope and Content No 11 Heriot Row, Edinburgh Heriot Row is an elegant south-facing terrace overlooking the wooded gardens of Queen Street. Designed by Robert Reid in 1802-3 as two sections, divided by Howe Street, it was the first street to be built in the northern New Town. No 11 projects slightly as part of the centrepiece of the eastern part of the terrace. The tall first-floor windows emphasise the importance of the drawing-room floor, and both the first and second-floor windows retain their original window sashes. Building in Heriot Row was developed and controlled in a uniform manner: 'houses were to be two storeys plus a basement, not to rise more than 33 feet (10m) above street level, except for the projecting houses which are to be limited to 51 feet (15.5m)'.
