Scope and Content Nos 9 and 11 Heriot Row, Edinburgh Heriot Row is an elegant south-facing terrace overlooking the wooded gardens of Queen Street. Designed by Robert Reid in 1802-3 as two sections, divided by Howe Street, it was the first street to be built in the northern New Town. Nos 9 and 11 project slightly as part of the centrepiece of the eastern part of the terrace. The dining-room floor, at street level, is rusticated, and the elongated first-floor windows emphasise the importance of the drawing-room floor above. In the period when the house was built, it was common to find a bedroom on the dining-room floor, for the convenience of guests, including the host, who drank too much at dinner. The principal bedroom on the drawing-room floor doubled as a reception room. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
