Scope and Content View of the interior of St Giles' Cathedral, looking west, High Street, Edinburgh The High Kirk of St Giles has been the central feature of the Old Town for nearly 800 years. Its central tower with its open crown forms a distinctive feature of the sky-line of the city. The nave has fine pointed tunnel-vaulting, characteristic of Scottish medieval architecture. The west window was replaced in 1985 by a modern representation of the life of the poet Robert Burns by Icelandic artist, Leifur Breidfjord. Pointed tunnel-vaults, ceilings of stone formed like arches, are frequent in Scottish late medieval architecture but otherwise rare. A Scottish peculiarity is the pointed tunnel-vault with surface ribs which are purely decorative in intention. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
