Scope and Content Main Street, West Wemyss, Fife West Wemyss became a burgh of barony in 1551. Initially its economy was based on salt-making though it had a harbour by 1621. In the 19th century, the town became dominated by the coal industry. Most of the houses on Main Street date from the early 19th century. At the far end, the 18th-century tolbooth tower dominates the townscape. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
