Scope and Content No 70 Princes Street, Edinburgh Princes Street was originally the south-facing terrace of James Craig's New Town. From the 1830s, Victorian reconstruction transformed the street into Edinburgh's principal thoroughfare of hotels, department stores, shops, offices and clubs. This tall narrow gable-fronted building, built of red sandstone, was designed by Hippolyte J Blanc as the Edinburgh Café in 1886. Hippolyte J Blanc, born in Edinburgh in 1844, became president of the Edinburgh Architecture Association 1871-2. He worked mainly in the French and English Gothic styles, and was responsible for much of the restoration of Edinburgh Castle in 1886. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
