Scope and Content Mid 20th-century postcard of High Street, Newburgh, Fife Newburgh became a burgh dependent on Lindores Abbey in 1266, and a royal burgh in 1631. The main industries were salmon fishing and weaving until 1891 when the Tayside Floorcloth Company came to the burgh. This mid-20th century postcard shows the High Street which contains many buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries. On the left side of the road stands St. Katherine's Church which was demolished in the 1960s. The tall building in the middle of the picture is the town hall. The building's future was under discussion in the year 2000. The building to the right of the steeple and public hall (round tower) were demolished to make room for a new housing complex. The shop on the right was the cooperative baker shop and is still in use today as a general store. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
