Description The Farr Stone. From J Stuart, The Sculptured Stones of Scotland, i, pl. xxxv.

Date 1856

Collection Copies of illustrations from John Stuart, The Sculptured Stones of Scotland

Catalogue Number D 8534

Category Photographs and Off-line Digital Images

Copies SC 341751

Scope and Content Cross-slab at Farr, Sutherland, Highland This cross-slab stands in the graveyard west of the church at Farr. The stone is carved on one side only suggesting that the back was not meant to be seen. One possibility is that the stone originally stood close to a wall. This is a drawing of the stone which appeared in John Stuart's 1856 publication 'The Sculptured Stones of Scotland'. The cross and background are decorated with interlace, with key-work above and below. Two birds with crossed necks decorate base. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
