Scope and Content Plans of Girvan Steeple ('Auld Stumpy'), South Ayrshire Girvan Steeple was originally built as part of the now-vanished 1822 Town Hall. Its £1,633 cost was apparently value for money because ten years later it was said to have caused 'a marked improvement in the peace of the town'. The Steeple was originally planned with two cells on each level. However, the contractors persuaded the council that it would be better to have thicker, and so stronger, walls.
