Scope and Content Late 19th century photograph of the Royal Scottish Academy, The Mound, Edinburgh, looking south from Hanover Street The Royal Scottish Academy was designed by William Playfair in 1822-6 for the Board of Manufactures and Fisheries to accommodate the Royal Society, the Institution for the Encouragement of the Fine Arts, and the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland. In 1831-6 the building was enlarged by Playfair, who added porticos to the corner blocks, sphinxes facing east and west, wreaths to the frieze, and carving to the main pediments. The north pediment was moved forward by a second row of columns. In 1844 a large seated statue of the young Queen Victoria was added over the north portico. The statue, carved by Sir John Steell, depicted her in robes 'draped so as to give a general idea of Britannia'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
