Scope and Content Aerial view of the motte of Lochmaben Old Castle, Dumfries and Galloway Remains of the de Brus motte-and-bailey occupy the neck of land between the Kirk Loch and Castle Loch, on the south-west edge of modern Lochmaben. The castle was probably erected shortly before 1172 when the king, William the Lion, was resident here. This aerial view shows the remains of the typical Norman 'pudding-bowl' shaped motte and its enclosing ditch (now partly truncated by the road). On the summit of the motte is a mound which is thought to have been where a stone keep stood. During the reign of David I (1124-1153) many Norman nobles, including the de Brus family, received estates across southern Scotland. Motte-and-bailey castles served as potent symbols of feudal lordship, as well as being a fortified residence. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
