Scope and Content Detail of an Ionic column at No 45 George Street, Edinburgh George Street was originally two opposite rows of plain-fronted houses. As the grand central thoroughfare of James Craig's New Town, it was made wider than its sister streets, Princes Street and Queen Street. This capital, from a Grecian Ionic column, is part of a ground-floor colonnade added to the original house at No 45 by Thomas Hamilton in 1829 when it became the main office of Blackwood's Magazine. Thomas Hamilton (1784-1858) one of Scotland's leading architects in the early 19th century, worked mainly in the Classical style. He designed Edinburgh's Royal High School (1825-9) in a Grecian Doric style as a copy of the Temple of Theseus in Athens. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
