Scope and Content Royal Society of Edinburgh Building, 22-24 George Street, Edinburgh The Royal Society of Edinburgh occupies the building designed for the Edinburgh Life Assurance Company in 1843 by William Burn and David Bryce. It was adapted for the Society's use in 1909. The façade of this three-storeyed five-bayed building is rather severe, typical of the style adopted by William Burn for most of his commercial and public buildings. It has an Italian palace-front, with simple Greco-Roman details. The Royal Society of Edinburgh is an eminent scientific institution, founded in 1783. Sir Walter Scott was its president, 1820-32, and Fellows have included Goethe and Robert Louis Stevenson. It has an outstanding library of scientific literature. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
